is a statewide competition between high schools to see which school can collect the most food to donate to their community. The purpose of this program is to create a fun and friendly competition for students to participate in and to encourage people across the state of Florida to give back to their communities.
Register for the competition on our website. Navigate to the "Register Here!" page of our website and follow all directions on that page to officially register! Make sure when filling out the onboarding form, you provide all requested and applicable information to make your registration process as smooth as possible.
This form can also be used by nonprofit partners, community organizations, and other companies who want to partner with Students Against Hunger!
Once you have filled out the form, be on the lookout in your email for a warm welcome and next steps from us!
Prior to the start of the competition, spend some time forming your team, recruiting volunteers, and planning out your events and programs!
Have students at your school plan food drives, collection events, fundraisers, etc. and start working out the details of how these events will run.
You can collect from students, teachers, parents, and general community members.
Teachers are welcome to participate in the planning process, but students should be the leading force behind these projects. Here at Students Against Hunger, we want to encourage leadership and initiative in students!
IMPORTANT: Make sure you reach out to your local food bank/donation center to see what items they accept and if they're willing to accept your donations.
You can collect non-perishable food, drinks, clothes, toys, books, household supplies, money, and more. All these items will go to help people in need. We encourage you to collect any and all items, however, only food and monetary donations will count for our competition.
Be sure to advertise your event in advance to get a good turnout!
There are many resources on our website page titled "Resource Center", and member exclusive resources on our mobile app!
Here is an additional way to add points to your total:
Students Against Hunger has teamed up with a few nonprofit organizations throughout the state of Florida that are dedicated to fighting food insecurity in our state.
If you hold a fundraiser and donate money to these organizations, we will count these donations toward your collection total.
$1 donated to one of these organizations can deliver up to 12 pounds of food, provide 10 meals, and eliminate 43 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions. Because of our desire to support these missions, for every $1 donated to one of our partner nonprofits, 1 pound of food will be added to your total!
In order to verify these donations, you must save a copy of your donation receipt to submit on our donation logging form.
Approved partner nonprofits that can accept monetary donations include:
Sharing Excess, Inc - www.sharingexcess.com
Second Harvest of the Big Bend - www.fightinghunger.org
Here is the last way to add points to your total:
You can host educational and/or advocacy events to add to your total!
Education is important because it helps to reduce stigma around seeking food assistance - a very big issue, especially among school-aged children. Fear of being judged for seeking food assistance is one of the biggest barriers to accessing help (Source). Another important benefit from education is making students and community members aware of the problem of food insecurity. Many people who aren't personally affected by food insecurity don't realize how big of a problem it is. Education will help encourage generosity and advocacy.
Advocacy is important to help reduce stigma, make more people aware of the problem of food insecurity, but also to help make food assistance more available. Recent legislation has cut back food assistance from the federal government, but advocacy can help persuade state governments to provide resources to people in need and provide food for those who need it!
Your points for these educational/advocacy events will be based off of the number of attendees at the events. For each attendee, 10 points will be added to your total. Make sure to take a picture of the event as proof so it can be verified and added to your total!
There are a lot of resources on our resource hub with ideas for education and advocacy events!
Once you have an event planned, it's time to run it!
If you are expecting to donate a large amount of food to a food bank after you collection event, make sure to alert them in advance so they can prepare.
There are tons of resources available on our resource hub to help you run a successful collection event, as well as member exclusive resources on our mobile app!
Once you've hosted a drive, it's time to donate your collections.
Step Three: Donate and Record
Once you've hosted a drive, it's time to donate your collections! Organize a way to get your collections from your drive to your local food bank/donation center. You can have students transport them for you, have the recipient agency collect them for you, or you can come up with a different method! When you get to the food bank/donation center, you MUST ask for a donation receipt. This receipt should include the date of donation, where it was donated, and the poundage of the total donation. This step is very important. Once you've hosted collection drives and donated your collections, here is how you can log them with us! If you are logging physical donations:
Make sure you have a copy of your donation receipt (This is REQUIRED to log points!!!)
Fill out our form for Food Donations on our mobile app! The Students Against Hunger Administrative Team will handle all record-keeping of donations, will send out weekly newsletters, and let you know of important reminders! An updated list of current stats from all participating schools will be published on our home page once the competition starts and will be available on our mobile app. We encourage friendly competition between schools, so have fun!
If you are logging monetary donations:
Fill out our form for Monetary donations on our mobile app with a copy of your donation receipt.
